Disembarking in Broome

Silver Cloud docked in Broome at around 7 am, with disembarkation starting at 8 am. We were among the first off as we had private transport arrangements to our hotel in Broome for the next 3 nights, so we’re not dependant on the conga line of buses waiting at the dock.

Two tugs were tethered to us going into port seemingly helping with cross currents

We were at the Oaks Hotel Broome by 9 am, and of course, rooms were not ready for us, so we had to check in, store our luggage and bide our time for the next few hours. It soon became clear that many of the people vacating their rooms, are passengers for the next sailing of Silver Cloud back to Darwin.

After sitting around and talking to others who were waiting to either check in or to go to the ship, we eventually ventured outside for a walk to get our bearings.

Then waterfront is only 1 block away, and town, apparently about 4 km. We received a few tips on local restaurants when talking to a couple that were heading off to Silver Cloud and had stayed at the hotel for the past few nights, so we headed out to have look.

We easily found Matso’s Brewery, only a short walk from the hotel. Finding one of the restaurants proved a lot more tricky, as the directions we had been given were way off the mark. Eventually we succeeded and decided to make a booking for Tuesday night. Monday night here is a night of rest for most restaurants.

It was still early so we went back to the hotel to get some time in air conditioning, but decided we would venture back out at Lunchtime to Matso’s, which turned out to be very popular.

All of the outside seating was taken, but we were happy to sit inside, and enjoyed a good meal and local beer and ginger beer.

After lunch we were told our rooms were now ready, so we headed back to the Oaks to move in. It is a busy reception area and there was quite a wait, just to get our key.

However, we have a very large room near the pool and it is very comfortable. Carole had a refreshing dip in the pool.

Our plan is to have dinner at the nearby Mangrove Hotel, which is reputed to have some of the better food in the area and is located on the shoreline, overlooking the mangroves.

The restaurant is outdoors and it was a nice evening to be outdoors. The food was typical pub food, and most of the wines were from Sandalford, as the hotel is owned by the same family that owns the winery.

It has been a pretty relaxing day, which we were ready for. Tomorrow we have a 6 hr organised tour of Broome that was included in our package.
